Mem Day weekend Part II
2006-05-31

Sunday after sleeping way late. I wandered around looking for a newspaper and then made breakfast. We had friends coming over so I cleaned up a bit. We sat on the seawall watching the boats for a while on a beautiful crystal clear day.
The folks who came to vist aren't boating folks and they were a bit awed at the perspective we get of Newp0rt on a regular basis. Mostly we just sat on the boat and talked, or sat on the YC deck and talked or had dinner at a local place and talked some more. They really had a great time and so did I. I nice day doing mostly nothing. Sometimes you just need one of those.
Monday we woke up to another postcard like day and tada, there was even breeze AND it was from the right direction. We left around 11:00 and sailed all the way home. M.E drove a good chunk of the way and did a great job. Down wind sailing can be tricky and she never really had the hang of it and then all of a sudden she did. It was kind of like a lightbulb going on, and the best part was she recognized it too.
The bay was mostly empty and I could have fallen asleep easily and yet I made myself stay awake. Some days are just too perfect to miss with something as mundane as sleep. The boat cruised along at a steady 5 knots and we didn't even bother to put on the radio. The sound of the water on the hull and the occasional overtaking wave were the perfect soundtrack. You could never explain it to somebody who wasn't there, but if you were, for a way too short of a time, all the cares you had in the world would have disappeared.
We got to EG way to quickly and weren't ready to leave yet so she made lunch while I scrubbed the boat and we had a bite, a drink and settled in to watch the Sunday boat parade. There are several bars and restuarants down the cove and every idiot with a boat shows up here eventually. We just sat there and watched, talked with friends and relaxed until another three hours had flown by. A weekend spent doing nothing of value, but totally priceless.
And life goes on.
