The weekend, part 1.....
2006-05-30

We loaded up the boat Friday night with most of the stuff we'd need for the weekend. We'd been grocery shopping and of course as usual, bought too much food, but we got it all stowed away, hit the YC bar and got home early for some well needed sleep.
The plan was to leave at 11:00 and we made it by 11:10, as close to being on time as you need to on a weekend I guess. It was foggy and cool and the water was as flat as glass. We motored the whole way to Newp0rt, the thumping of the diesel marking the time as all the familliar landmarks popped up out of the fog.
The tide was with us. You could see the little swirls it left around the lobster pots as it flushed us out of the bay. We made good time and just about two hours later, we were at the YC.
Now docking a 40' boat with a folding prop and 7 1/2' of lead under here can be interesting at times. You have to judge the wind the tide and figure out just where to swing the bow, how much speed you need to make the turns, but not plow into the end of the dock. The new dockhands at the club looked on nervously as I made my try. It looked good, it was good. I heard one of the kids tell the other one, don't worry about this guy, he's a pro and on this one day it was true. We came to a stop perfectly aligned and got the boat tied up and settled in.
I paid the bill, put up the awnings and even set up the electric palm tree. While I did boat stuff M.E whipped up a grill chicken ceasar salad that I washed down with my first glass o grapes of the day. The sun was out, the fog lifted and for a little bit of time all was right with the world.
